The lobster has become shorthand for an entire argument: hierarchies are natural, ancient, and built into biology itself — so ancient that even a creature separated from us by hundreds of millions of years of evolution organizes itself the same way we do. I've made a version of this argument myself, in writing about status and dominance in men. It's worth being precise about what actually holds up, because the critique of the lobster comparison is real, and ignoring it doesn't serve anyone.
What the Argument Actually Claims
The core claim is about serotonin. Lobsters that win contests show elevated serotonin activity; lobsters that lose show suppressed activity, and behave more submissively as a result. The extrapolation is that humans run on a similar chemical logic — that our own status-tracking, our sense of confidence or defeat, taps into a signaling system old enough to predate the vertebrate brain entirely.
Where the Comparison Breaks Down
The honest problem is this: serotonin does very different things in different nervous systems. In lobsters — invertebrates with a simple nerve-cord structure — serotonin operates on a small number of clearly mapped circuits. In vertebrates, and especially in mammals with a cortex, serotonin acts across an enormous, highly branched network, interacting with mood, impulse control, sleep, appetite, and dozens of other systems simultaneously. Pointing to "serotonin does X in lobsters" and concluding "therefore serotonin does X in humans" skips over the fact that the same molecule can play structurally different roles depending on what kind of nervous system it's operating inside.
This doesn't mean the underlying intuition is wrong. It means the lobster is doing more rhetorical work than scientific work. It's a vivid, memorable illustration — not a proof.

What's Actually Defensible
Strip away the lobster and the real, better-supported claim is narrower and more interesting: status hierarchies of some form appear extremely widely across social species, and the drive to seek and hold status is not a modern cultural invention — it shows up across cultures, across history, and across species with radically different neural architecture. That's a real, cross-disciplinary finding. It just doesn't need a single-neurotransmitter mechanism borrowed from a crustacean to be true.
Why the Distinction Matters Clinically
I bring this up not to score a rhetorical point but because the distinction changes how you should think about your own drive for status. If you believe status-seeking is hardwired at the level of a single brain chemical, it starts to feel deterministic — something happening to you rather than something you're doing. If instead you understand status-seeking as a broad, flexible drive shaped by biology but massively shaped by context, judgment, and choice, it becomes something you can actually direct.
This is the same distinction I make constantly in practice: the drive itself isn't the problem, and it isn't fixed destiny either. It's raw material, responsive to how you train it.
The Better Question
Not "is this biological" — almost everything about human motivation has some biological substrate, that's not interesting on its own. The better question is: what do you do with a real, evolutionarily old drive to matter, to be seen, to hold ground, once you have it? That's a question about character, not chemistry. And it's the one actually worth answering.
